Their parents include gospel singer Cissy Houston, aka Emily Lee Drinkard - and John Russell Houston Jr. Whitney's cousin Dionne Warwick also was famous for her singing. Her first singing gig was in the choir of the church she attended The New Hope Baptist Church in Newark in the early years of her childhood and at 15 was singing backing vocals professionally alongside their mother in Chaka Khan's 1978 smash Im Every Woman. Her mother, Jermaine and Lou Rawls were among the musicians she performed with. In 1981 her cover was featured within Seventeen Magazine. The singer began her career as a featured vocalist for the New York-based funk band Material in the year 1981. It was this high quality of her work as a vocalist in the band that caught the attention of major record labels, including Arista who signed her in 1983, and with whom she was for the rest the duration of her career. Whitney Houston's debut Whitney Houston album was released in the year 1985. It would become one of the best-selling albums by an artist. Several hit singles including the hit songs Saving All My Love For You How Do I know That You Love Me as well as The greatest Love of All were released from the album, setting her up to smash the Beatles record with seven consecutive US top 10s. It sold three million copies during its initial year, and over 25 million worldwide. The album won her first six Grammys. The Whitney 1987 album, which included The Place You Do Broken Hearts and I Wanna Dance With Somebody as songs, helped to build on the successes she'd achieved. But it was The Bodyguard 1992 which cemented her status as one of the most well-known artists in the world. While the film wasn't an immediate success, nor was her performance, the score of her Dolly Parton version I Will Always Love You reached the number one spot on the single and album charts in America for a period of time. Her sales exceeded 44 million albums worldwide. It was also in 1993 that she married Bobby Brown, an ex-New Edition singer and father of her only child Bobbi Kristina Brown.
