Whitney Houston and Dana Bash
Whitney Elizabeth Houston, born 9 August 1963 into a musically inclined family in Newark New Jersey is the daughter of Gospel star Cissy Houston and John Russell Houston Jr. They are also cousins of the singer Dionne Warwick. Her mother and she began to sing professionally together at the New Hope Baptist Church of Newark when Whitney was only fifteen years old. The two sang backing vocals in Chaka Khan's track in 1978 Im Every Woman. In the following years, she was a background vocals for Jermaine Jackson and Lou Rawls and her mother. The singer was first a featured vocalist for the The New York-based New York Funk band Material. Her vocal quality work attracted attention from the major label Arista which she joined in 1983. Whitney Houston became the top-selling debut album for an artist in 1985. Several hit singles including The Greatest Love of All, Saving My Love For You How Can I Tell You If That You Love Me as well as The greatest Love of All were released from the album setting the stage for her to beat the Beatles with seven consecutive US number ones. The album itself sold 3 million copies during its initial season in the US as well as sell 25 million worldwide winning her the first of her six Grammies. The follow-up album released in 1987 Whitney featuring the hit songs The Place Do Broken Hearts Go and I Wanna Dance With Somebody built upon her successes, but it was her 1992 movie The Bodyguard (1992) that established her as one of the most successful artists of all time. While her movie performance as well as its soundtrack weren't well-received, her Dolly Parton cover I Will Always Love You as well as the album accompanying it were top of the charts around the globe for several months. The same year that she welcomed her daughter Bobbi she married Bobby Brown of the ex-New Edition group. At this point, her documented substance abuse began and by 1996, the singer had been using drugs on a daily basis.
